Summary: of news article taken from CTV>ca on Friday Aug.1, 2008
"Bus attack suspect appears in Manitoba court"

Vince Weiguang Li, 40 was taken to the Provincial Court in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba on Friday Aug. 1, 2008. Li is facing a second-degree murder charge for the stabbing and beheading of 22-year-old Tim McLean on Thursday night, July 31st. They were passengers and seatmates on a Greyhound Bus about 18km west of Portage La Prairie when the violent incident occurred.

There seems no reason for the attack. Tim’s friends say he has never been in a fight. It seems Tim was not asleep as everyone thought. Instead, he was texting a girfriend minutes before the attack. Derek Caron, a friend of Tim’s waited at the bus station all night for him.

Police said Li has no known criminal record and appeared to lead a normal life in Edmonton with his wife. The judge said Li should talk to a lawyer before a psychiatric assessment can be done. Li hasn’t said a word and only nods in response to questions.

The McLean family is angry that they had to find out about Tim’s death from a journalist, that the RCMP took too long to notify them.

The other passengers on the bus are receiving counselling after the nightmarish ordeal. It may take a long time for them to recover.

Questions:
1) How can we prevent something like this from happening again?
2) Is ridership down?
3) How do bus drivers feel about their own safety?
4) What will happen to Li if he is found not fit for trial?

Oh my god. That was pretty violent and sad. Though that is what happens in the world! Li was a crazy man for sure. Not normal. I hope that the Mclean family is okay

If there was no reason, how do ypu know if it wasn't an accident. I think if he didn't have a reason then it was an accident. Or maybe li has gotten in a fight before or has picked on someone

Li should be killed to protect others from his phycotic attacks, or put in solitary confinement for life. I disliked this topic for 2 reasons, 1: It's morbid and makes me feel queasy, and slightly terrorfied. 2: It has nothing to do with aboriganals!!!
Try to lay off the horid topics David

1) We can prevent this by placing CCTV camera's in all public transport vehicles.

2) In what context are you talking about ridership?

3) I think after this incident they fell unsafe, an idea would be to make a seperate booth for the driver. Just like in trains.

4)Nothing. He would obviously not be guilty and be free.

That was a pretty nasty article. I think that they should have security every were to prevent that to happen. That would cost more money for the gouverment but it would help save lives. Or hire more police officers.

Resonse To Conrad:

Conrad you cannot have a death sentence against someone in Canada.
It's the simple and obvious rules of law enforcement. And once again, the point of this was NOT to ridicule someones hard work.

Mqn that guy is crazy!!!

ConS.s said...

Saad, how would that help, we would just get to see the killing happen on the CCTV cameras

That was a very sad story David.I wonder what Li had against Tim anyways. Gives me a bit of a flash-back when JFK was killed.

Matt.I said...

Im sure the person that murdered him was extremly crazy and did not know what was happening.

Im sure that li was a crazy guy and there must be some sort of marrige and some sort of problem for someone to do such a thing. I feel bad for the Mclean family for such a terrible death. I also think Saad's idea of having video camera's in busses might have an effect of scaring murderours from killing on busses and might give some sort of explanation on how to stop it. It was an overal good and touching artical.

That was a good artical.

1)I do not think we can prevent somthing like that from happening because it sounds like the guy just snapped he had no criminal record

2) I think ridership was down at the time but by now people have probably forgotten about it.

3) I think that the bus drivers feel uncomfortable

4)then Li would go to a mental institution.
