Old Growth Forests
Protecting Old Growth Forests
What impact will this story have on Canada's future?
What conflicting interests are presented?Value found in old-growth forests

The Canadian PressSeptember 4, 2008 at 1:51 PM EDTVANCOUVER — Leaving British Columbia's old-growth forests standing may make more economic sense than cutting them down for timber, especially as the province looks to strategies to cut global warming, a new B.C. study suggests. The report from Simon Fraser University challenges the status quo and uses Ministry of Forest data to show that conservation wins out over logging when forests are valued for their role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, protecting endangered species and providing opportunities for recreation. The study backed by three environmental groups – Wilderness Committee, David Suzuki Foundation, and Ecojustice – used computer modelling to look at a variety of conservation and logging scenarios in a large tract of forest near Vancouver. In almost every scenario, the researchers said, they found that the value of the carbon captured and stored by the trees far outweighed the value of the lumber harvested from the logs.Internet LinksB.C. forest information map Faisal Moola, science director for the David Suzuki Foundation, called the results a clear indicator that B.C. should be protecting its old-growth forest as it works with other western provinces to reduce global warming.“The old-growth forests that we have are not only going to be a benefit in the fight against climate change, but there's also a significant economic windfall that could be celebrated by British Columbians,” he said.

Thank you for sharing that amazing article with me Mrs.Ramon. I enjoyed it deeply. I really liked how you chose David Suzuki. I didn't know you like him. That was my favourite article i have ever read in school!
My comment is that this is a story that should be used well and I think that this is a very true story and due to its well being, I hope it is true
I thought that artical was very interesting and how the David suzzuki found daytion and how there cuting douwn all the trees and the global warming that's happening right now in the world
Personally, I think that David Suzuki, Power Wise and so on, are all different types of ways just to get the public's attention. It's all just a bunch of garbage.
I mean a lot of people get all excited and say "look it's good to have people who care about the environment" but it's all just a marketing scandal, using the word "environment" in your product doesn't mean that you actually care about the environment. I highly doubt that the Director of Marketing at some big shot company is going to actually care about green house gasses.
If anyone wants to rebut me on this topic I am available everyday after 5:30pm everyday.

I think that sucking carbon from our ever changing atmosphere is much more important than choping them down for timber. If to much carbon fills our lungs we die\we get chilly we live! Whats more important I wonder!(sarcasm)
I think it made alot of sence that they left the growth forest, it did alot of good for the environment and logging. Great blog!
I think that its very interesting that tree can do so much and that it show that people every were are trying to stop global warming.
I think that taking carbon-dioxide from the environment has a much more useful impact on the environment than cutting down trees
I think that was a very good article because it was about David Suzuki. That was one of the best articles I have ever read!
thanks for sharing. It was a very good article it was interstingand even thou i dont even now David Suzuki hope its true it was great thanks for sharing....
I found that article very intresting Mrs. Ramon. I think that aritcle was very interesting i have heard alotr about David Suzuki and he is concetrned about the enviorment!
Thank you Mrs. Ramon for that amazing article, I really injoyed it. I think they shouldent of cut down the trees in the first point because it kills us, and it kills the habitat of animals, and even could kill animal's.
I thought it was an interesting article but I don't understand what they meant by getting a windfall if they leave the tree's.

I would think that the gouverment would let the first nation guys in the jury. But only if the filled in there forms. But they are kind of being mean and not because the first nation guys didin't hand back there forms.
